The effect of the Dawes Act, which was mostly well intentioned, resulted in a further destruction of tribal life. Unlike much commentary on the subject of its day, “A Century of Dishonor” pulls no punches and uses no euphemisms in condemning the double-dealing and violence of those who wrested away the Native Americans’ land by trickery and force. Matt rated it really liked it Nov 15, It sets the stage for todays current aboriginal issues, giving readers a deeper understanding of the violations done towards the indigenous peoples of America. The army officers in charge reiterated these statements, and implored the department to permit them to remain at the North; but it was of no avail. This was in part, she explains, because the treaties written in English purposefully had different expectations than jacskon written for and signed by the Native populations.
